When you think about space travel, what is first thing that comes up in your mind? Let us give you a hint. You will need proper equipment. Something light, yet durable and extremely comfortable. Something in which you would be able to fly, or at least you would feel like you are flying. We might have the right solution for you, here on Earth – Jordan Brand’s Proto-React.
Last autumn Nike released Air Jordan XXXIII introducing the Flight Utility design. “As we focus on the future, we need to lead with innovation. We call this Flight Utility, and it’s about designing for the future — extrapolating from the core Jordan Brand DNA along an innovation and function-first approach,” said David Creech, VP of Design for Jordan Brand Shoes, in a piece which he wrote for Nike.com.
Jordan Proto-React is part of the Flight Utility range which also includes the Jordan Apex-Utility among the AJ XXXIII. Unlike its retro-futuristic mate Nike Air Max 720, Jordan Proto-React looks like it has travelled all the way from a galaxy which is millions of light years away.
The shoe features Nike’s latest cushioning innovation – Nike React. The Swoosh designed the breakthrough footwear foam to match the needs of sprinters and basketball players. Nike asked them what they wanted and they delivered. They needed better cushioning, they wanted better energy return, they needed lightweight and lasting shoes. Four opposite qualities in one material. Why opposite? Because foam can provide either cushioning or energy return. And it can be either lightweight or durable. Not all simultaneously. But Nike React is all of those four things in one. Talking about the future.
The Jumpman’s design team created the Jordan Proto-React silhouette as one of the most unique pairs of shoes we have ever seen. A pure lifestyle sneaker, yet performance driven, it hones in on the qualities of a basketball shoe. Its name derives from the prototype-like look with exposed stitching, taped seams, and minimal branding details.
The silhouette is technical, mimicking an astronaut’s space suit. The uppers are made of nylon with exposed stitching and durable straps. Below you will find a React foam-based mid sole and a spaghetti-like traction pattern. There are adjustable straps on the heel, Jumpman branding is placed on the heel tab, and on the tongue you can spot a reflective detailing.
The Proto-React debuted in four colourways during September 2018’s unveil of the Air Jordan 33. The pair came in three different shades of grey, with metallic and neon looks, and there was also a white version.
Recently another all-new colourway arrived early in Japan, giving a nod to Chicago Bulls. The upper comes in black, red branding is on the tongues, heels, and outer sole, and the React foam underneath is white.
The Jordan Proto React will make its debut later on this Spring season at select Jordan Brand retailers and Nike.com.
