What do Vans and a furniture company have in common? No, it is not a shoe rack. We are talking about the most recent collaboration between Modernica and Vault, the Vans’ premium division.
This pair might seem a bit odd one at first but if you think about it, you could find at least two things these companies share. First of all – origin. Both brands are a big part of the culture of Southern California. Second, they use their products as a canvas. So the result is the new Vault x Modernica limited edition collection. Vans and Modernica joined their design and craftsmanship forces, and a year later they developed unique Style 36 LX and OG Slip-On LX silhouettes. Three matching fiberglass shell chairs came along too. If you are a Vans fan you will not be surprised to see the iconic checkered motif, blue palm pattern and orange Hawaiian print on the sneakers and chairs.
“When we looked to do this, it was about pairing designs from our history that work well with theirs,” Mark Haskins, Vans’ VP Footwear of Design shared with COOL HUNTING. “These simple two-colour graphics, they’re traditional for us, but they match the modern design aesthetic. The back and forth was about what’s appropriate for each. Ultimately, though, it’s really about celebrating the craftsmanship.”
This is not something new for Vans. The company has a long tradition of collaboration and has always looked to outside partners in the past. Recently we told you about one such partner – Purlicue . “These are great partnerships from a design perspective, it’s interesting to see what someone else brings to our shoes and our icons. It’s about the spirit of collaboration and learning something from someone who brings another perspective,” explains Haskins.
Modernica is one of the leaders in the furniture design. Founded over 25 years ago, the company prides itself with revitalizing and preserving the almost lost art of high-pressure fiberglass molding. The Los Angeles based factory creates each chair shell, by hand, one-by-one, the same way they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s.
The shell chairs are part of Californian living and so is Vans. The Vault x Modernica collection is a result of mutual respect, and respect to tradition and craftsmanship in the locally-made. Vans does not strive to be considered modern in the design of sneakers. With the mid-century design of the chairs, the collection is as close to vintage as you will encounter.
Taka Hayashi is the designer of the three footwear offerings, which consist of the OG Slip On and Style 36 LX. Checkered genuine leather covers the uppers and suede toe panels of each sneaker.
The Vault by Vans x Modernica collection will be available on 23 February, from Modernica.net as well as other Vault by Vans distributors around the globe. The Slip On and Style 36 will retail for £62 and £70 respectively while the chairs will cost £384.
